Parks Foundation of Monterey County

California arts and cultures

For over 25 years, the Parks Foundation of Monterey County has provided humanities and environmental education programs for Monterey County youth.

In 2012, the Foundation received a grant from ACTA’s Living Cultures Grants Program to support We Are Still Here, a project to complement three permanent hands-on exhibits that focus on the Native California tribes of Monterey County.   The title reinforces that Native cultures are alive and thriving and did not disappear despite the Spanish conquest, the Mexican Republic, and American settlement.  With the participation of the Ohlone/Costanoan Nation and the Salinan Cultural Preservation Association, three culture bearers will share basket weaving (Linda Yamane: Ohlone Tribe), music and dance (Patrick Orozco: Ohlone), and storytelling through poetry (Stephen Meadows: Ohlone).
