Son Jarocho Zapateado
Xochi Flores is a mother of three young women, a community artist, activist, and scholar who uses the tools within our communities to foster growth and the intentional participation of all stakeholders. She has worked with communities in the United States and Mexico to develop multidisciplinary projects in music, poetry, dance, baking, and motherhood that strengthen relationships within families and communities. Xochi is a founding member of the Son Jarocho/Chicanx group Los Cambalache, which has been active in the Chicane/Latine community since 2009. She holds a master’s degree in educational leadership and human services and teaches multicultural arts in Los Angeles at Cal State LA and in California state prisons for women.

Son Jarocho Zapateado with Alejandra Ocasio
Alejandra Ocasio will learn from Xochi Flores the Son Jarocho tradition of zapateado, a dance practice from southern Veracruz, Mexico, rooted in community celebration, ritual, and oral transmission. The apprenticeship will focus on dance rhythms, structure, and improvisation through intensive, community-based learning, helping Alejandra deepen her skills and carry forward this traditional practice.
