Apprenticeship Program

2025
Zachary Issac will deepen his practice in Tahitian drumming through focused study of Rohi Pehe under the mentorship of Tylon Buendia. This apprenticeship centers on the oral transmission of ancestral rhythms and techniques, emphasizing authenticity through learning by ear and repetition. Training includes hand positioning, tone control, tempo management, and rhythmic layering, as well as the distinct roles and sounds of traditional drums such as the fa‘atete, to‘ere, and tairi parau. Through this process, the apprentice will develop not only technical skill but also the cultural knowledge, responsibility, and leadership needed to perform, teach, and sustain Tahitian drumming traditions within the Tahitian American diaspora.
