Grupo Folklorico Los Girasoles
Mexican folkloric dance
Grupo Folklorico Los Girasoles is a group of children and youth in Pixley, California, in southern Tulare County. In 1997, three immigrant mothers from Michoacan, Mexico, noticed the lack of cultural and artistic programs for their children. Given this need, the women created the folkloric group Los Girasoles and began teaching their own children and any others that wanted to participate the dances of their native Michoacan. Los Girasoles is still run by its three founding instructors, and and currently has fifteen members between the ages of 8 and 14.
In 2014 and 2012, Los Girasoles received a grant from ACTA’s Living Cultures Grants Program to support the instruction they provide to community youth ages 15-19. Los Girasoles also continues to expand their dance repertoire by participating in the annual Festival Danzantes Unidos.
