Ginga Arts
Ginga Arts is a nonprofit organization based in Los Angeles that emowers underserved and at-risk youth by offering ongoing classes featuring the traditional Afro-Brazilian martial art of capoeira. Ginga Arts uses capoeria — part martial arts, part dance, part percussion, and part game — as an effective tool to reach out to children and engage them in a healthy, positive activity. Capoeria fosters cultural pride among a wide range of young people from African and/or Latino descent, and Ginga Arts hopes that it will be the ginga, or fundamental skill, upon which the children of Southern California will build their life skills, becming self-reliant, responsible, cooperative and productive members of society.
in 2014, Ginga Arts received a grant from ACTA’s Living Cultures Grants Program to support their Community Capoeira Project at EXPO Park, which provides free, ongoing capoeira classes to youth between the ages of 5 and 18.
