Edrees Osman began studying tabla (paired hand drums) in person in 2014 under Ustad Toryalai Hashimi, Eman Hashimi, and Sandip Ghosh. Since then, he has continued his education in classical tabla through online study. This traditional art form is incredibly important to Edrees and his community because his work focuses on preserving and presenting traditional folk and classical music as practiced throughout the different eras of Afghanistan’s history to a broader Western audience. He believes it is not sufficient to perform for or entertain only his own community. This music is his greatest passion and primary creative outlet, allowing him to express the music he heard as a child and remain connected to the cultural heritage inherited from his parents and ancestors.

Afghan Rhythm & Music with apprentice Adeel Safi

Adeel Safi will train under Edrees Osman in Afghan tabla, with a focus on the endangered Kharabati style from Kocheh Kharabat in Kabul, Afghanistan. Edrees will guide Adeel in traditional taals, thekas, laggis, kaidas, and relas, while strengthening his tone, timing, and ability to accompany singers and instrumentalists in live performance. Through this training, Adeel will deepen his knowledge and performance skills while helping carry forward a musical tradition increasingly endangered by the persecution of musicians in Afghanistan.
