Central Coast Japanese American Legacy Organization
The Central Coast Japanese American Legacy Organization’s ambition is to preserve, document, and contribute to the living history of the Central Coast’s Japanese American community, now five generations strong.
A grant from ACTA’s Living Cultures Grants Program in 2015 will support the development of a community website, where oral traditions and cultural arts practices will be digitally documented and shared publicly. A partner project to the Garden of Enduring Values – a 1.5 acre legacy garden housed on the historical site of a former Japanese American community center and haven – the website will document such cultural practices as: the drying of persimmons in autumn, mochi-tsuki rice pounding of the newly harvested short grain rice in winter, ikebana flower arranging in the spring, and obon dancing practices in the summer.
