Dehcontee Liberian Dance Company
Liberian dance
Oakland’s Dehcontee Liberian Dance Company focuses exclusively on the cultures of the ethnic groups that comprise the nation of Liberia.
In 2002, support from ACTA’s Traditional Arts Development Program allowed Dehcontee to secure assistance from master dancer/artist Kasumo Massaquoi teach the dance company new dances, drum rhythms, and songs of the ethnic groups of Liberia during a three-month residency. This mentorship helped Dehcontee in its goal to maintain the authenticity of the Liberian ethnic traditions, costumes, drums, and songs that the company presents in public performances.
