Storytelling

Michael D. McCarty is a professional storyteller who has performed in venues such as The Getty Museum, the John Anson Ford Theater, African Festival of the Arts (Chicago), the Glistening Waters Festival of Storytelling (New Zealand), and the Vancouver Storytelling Festival (British Columbia). He has taught workshops locally and internationally, from working with gang members at Echo Park Libraries all the way to a drug abuse facility in South Africa.  

Before becoming a full-time storyteller in 1992, Michael studied medicine. He received degrees from both the University of Illinois, Chicago and the Midwest College of Oriental Medicine and worked as an acupuncturist in Los Angeles at the TURNAROUND Drug Detoxification Center.

Michael has been a Teaching Artist with ACTA since 2015, offering Storytelling workshops at California State Prison, Valley State Prison, California Correctional Institution, Wasco State Prison, and California City Correctional Facility.
