Fresh Meat Productions
LGBT arts and culture
Fresh Meat Productions builds community through the arts by creating, presenting, and touring original transgender and queer arts programs. Our year-round performances and exhibitions feature outstanding work by leading transgender, gender variant, and queer performing, dance, literary, visual, and media artists. They are the first organization of our kind in the nation.
In 2008, 2009, and 2010, Fresh Meat Productions received grants from ACTA’s Living Cultures Grants Program to explore the role of traditional art froms in the LGBT community. During their annual festival, Fresh Meat Productions presented traditional arts companies, whose artistic directors are queer, in performing Brazilian capoeira, Hawaiian hula, Appalachian clogging, and Japanese taiko before an almost exclusively LGBT audience. Panel discussions exploring the relationship between queer sensibility and traditional arts were led by folklorist and consultant to the project, Kay Turner.
