Fandango Fronterizo is a 17-year old grassroots organization based in Tijuana and operating in the larger binational border region of Tijuana and San Diego, with the purpose of bringing Son Jarocho music education and immersion to the general public. Our work culminates in the annual Fandango Fronterizo, a live, participatory music festival held at the U.S.-Mexico border wall that draws hundreds of Son Jarocho musicians and aficionados from around the world each year. Our vision is to spread the message of peace and love through Son Jarocho music. Fandango Fronterizo will partner with Via International’s Somos La Voz program to offer an intensive apprenticeship training for members of the Chicano/Mexican youth community in San Diego to be leaders in the Son Jarocho movement.

Passing the Son Jarocho Torch to Chicano Youth in San Diego
Through this funding, Fandango Fronterizo will implement a four-month apprenticeship program for Mexican and Chicano youth of San Diego to become leaders in the local inter-generational Son Jarocho community, taking the torch from elders to conserve this endangered art and bring this folkloric music to the young generation.
