California Chinese Orchestra

Traditional Chinese music

The California Chinese Orchestra was established to preserve the art of traditional and contemporary classical Chinese music.  Its central mission is to promote awareness of Chinese musical heritage, to support the exchange of cultures, and to celebrate the unique contributions that Chinese immigrants have made to the artistic prosperity of the San Francisco Bay Area.  The California Chinese Orchestra provides low-cost and/or free music lessons to youth and adults, aged 8-80.  Since its founding in 1993, the California Chinese Orchestra has produced annual concerts and other performances throughout the Bay Area.

In 2014, 2011 and 2009, the California Chinese Orchestra received a grant from ACTA’s Living Cultures Grants Program to support their Passing on the Lineage project, a free music education program to study traditional Chinese instruments and compositions.  The work of composer and conductor Jeffrey Wong was featured.

The following video features a 2009 performance of the California Chinese Orchestra.
