Abrahan Ramirez Ramirez
Oaxacan art
About the Artist
Abrahan Ramirez Ramirez, is a Mixtec immigrant artisan from Guadalupe de Ramirez, Oaxaca. He grew up in a community with limited resources, but thanks to his parents, discovered his passion for art. His father, a farmer and cab driver, taught him how to create spinning tops and wooden slingshots, while his mother, a housewife, passed on her creativity to him through weaving nylon thread and recycled materials, such as hats, scarves and bags made from can rings. After studying at the Benito Juárez Autonomous University of Oaxaca (UABJO), he emigrated to the United States in 2018 with his wife. In this new country, he has adapted to its laws, systems and language, but at the same time, he has immersed himself in agricultural work, construction and community building. It is that combination of knowledge, experiences and passion for art that led Abrahan to participate in the ArteVism Fellowship program.

With the funds, Abrahan plans to engage youth and the community in the creation of Oaxacan lanterns and festive instruments used in special celebrations. It will expand cultural knowledge of Oaxacan decorations beyond papel picado, encouraging creativity and the development of crafts.
