Kárpátok Hungarian Folk Ensemble was founded in 1965 by a group of young Hungarian immigrants wishing to preserve their heritage. The name “Kárpátok” was chosen as a symbol of greater Hungary; the ensemble’s repertoire include examples from all three dance dialects: Transdanubia, the great Hungarian Plains, and Transylvania. In the last fourty years, more than 400 volunteer members have participated in Kárpátok.
In 2008, Kárpátok Hungarian Folk Ensemble received a grant from ACTA’s Living Cultures Grants Program to support a series of workshops, led by master dancer István Szabó from Hungary, designed to encourage local San Diego dancers to reach a new level of skill and commitment. István also provided teaching sessions for the Buzavirag Hungarian Children’s Group in Central Los Angeles and developed new choreographies which resulted in a performance with live music.
